SCRIPTURE

Luke 12:13-21

OUTLINE

Why are we tempted to do so?

  • Our sin nature.
  • Our family values when we were growing up.
  • Our peers.
  • Our susceptibility to the media, particularly advertising and most particularly, online come-ons.
  • Our self-doubt
  • Our lack of faith in God’s promises.

What is the result of this?

  • We compare ourselves to others.
  • We start putting on airs.
  • We become so obsessed about self-success that we overlook the needs of others.
  • We live by fear that somehow enough will not be enough.
  • We turn God into a what-can-He-do-for-me God and stop being what-can-I-do-for-Him followers.

What must change?

  • Our hearts, by trusting God’s promises.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Do you think it’s any harder now to live a non-materialistic life than in “the old days?” Why or why not?
  2. If you’re tempted to be too materialistic, what’s the major influencer regarding that pull?
  3. Michael Fechner did a u-turn when it came to materialism. What might scare you about taking the same step?
  4. Think about being on your death bed. (I know, morbid question!) What do you think will be prominent in your thoughts at that time? Does your life reflect these values? Why or why not?

NEXT STEP

  • Tear down some barns by turning your heart to God’s certain promises and away from man’s empty promises.
