Defining idolatry: An idol is anything that keeps you from the true God.

1. Two spheres of idolatry.

Key Thought: The human heart is a perpetual idol factory.

2. A strategy to shut down the idol factory.

TALK IT OVER

  1. How many countries have you visited? What unique cultural differences did you observe?
  2. John ended his letter this way, “Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.” Why would John close his letter this way?
  3. How would you define idolatry? What are the unique idols in America? In our churches?
  4. Someone said, “The human heart is a perpetual idol factory.” What do you think of the statement? Is there a distinction between external idolatry and internal idolatry?
  5. Read the following passages about idolatry: Exodus 20:3-4, Exodus 32:4, Ezekiel 14:3, Ezekiel 16:17-20, Psalm 106:36-38, Romans 1:21-25, Colossians 3:5. What did you learn about idolatry in these passages?
